While the other animated movies in the DCU: Batman franchise have their fair share of cynicism and complicated storylines, this one manages to outdo them. The cynicism comes off as excessive and glib. The Joker's sick humor referencing his physical abuse of Harley Quinn when they were lovers comes off as, at best, an unnecessary revelation of the Joker's character this just in: The Joker isn't very niceand at worst, mining humor out of abuse.
Some of the characters fight each other, others sleep together. The relative lack of Batman to counterbalance all the bad guys and ladies also wears thin in Batman: Animated or not, the enigmatic Batman tends to heighten and exaggerate the flamboyance of his enemies. When they are all outmatched, Superman realizes its vulnerability to kryptonite, and retrieves the spear to kill it.
In the creature's last moments, it kills Superman, himself weakened by exposure to kryptonite. Luthor is arrested and Batman confronts him in prison, warning Luthor that he will always be watching him. Luthor gloats that Superman's death has made the world vulnerable to powerful alien threats. A memorial is held for Superman in Metropolis.
Clark is also declared dead, with various friends and family members including Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince attending his funeral in Smallville.
Martha gives an envelope to Lois, which contains an engagement ring from Clark. After the funeral, Bruce expresses his regrets to Diana about how he failed Superman. He reveals to her that he plans to form a team of metahumans, starting with those from Luthor's files, to help protect the world in Superman's absence.
After they leave, the dirt atop Clark's coffin levitates. A billionaire socialite and owner of Wayne Enterprises who dedicates himself to protecting Gotham City from its criminal underworld as a highly trained, masked vigilante. On Batman's suit, Zack Snyder commented "I had a really strong idea about what I wanted to do — I really wanted to do sort of a fabric-based Batman; not what's become the more normal, armored Batman.

This is also a dead end, as Harley has no clue where the bomb is located; Batman is forced to send her back to Arkham.
At Arkham, Harley encounters the Joker, who begins taunting how he previously kicked her out of a car, and ends up lashing out by attempting to shoot him with a stolen gun, only to fail in doing so due to the Joker's bulletproof prison cell.
This distraction allows the others to infiltrate Arkham in disguises.
