Final take-home examinations not set according to this normal practice must be formally scheduled by Scheduling and Examination Services and are subject to overload rules. In all cases the rules for take-home examinations must be well communicated to students by course instructors.
Students are not required to write with an exam conflict defined as two examinations scheduled at the same time nor in an exam overload, defined as i 3 or more examinations scheduled in 3 consecutive time slots, ii 4 or more examinations scheduled in 5 consecutive time slots, or iii 5 or more examinations scheduled in 7 consecutive time slots, where a time slot refers to the morning, afternoon, or evening time slot on an exam day.
Normally, the accommodation for a missed final examination will be granting the student the opportunity to write a deferred examination. In specific cases when it is not possible to offer a deferred examination, and with the approval of the Dean, an alternate accommodation may be made. Students granted a deferred final examination who are then unable to write the deferred final examination due to properly documented personal or medical conditions may appeal to receive one of the notations Aegrotat AEG or Withdrawn WDN for the course as assigned by the appropriate appeal committee.
Results and Grades | Examinations
Students may not petition for one of these alternate notations if they attended the deferred examination but did not complete it for personal or medical reasons unless the circumstances satisfy the requirements for Early Departure from Final Examinations in section 2. If a student would be unable to pass the course as specified in the course outline, regardless of the result of a final examination, a grade of F may still result. If a student is passing the term work and is able to pass the course as specified in the course outline, based on the results of a final examination, then a withdrawn WDN may be granted.
Aegrotat standing may be considered for applicants for deferred finals but will be granted only if a substantial proportion of the term work has been completed and is of high quality. AEG denotes a pass standing. Students who have obtained approval for a deferred examination in a Carleton University Online CUOL course will have access to course materials after the end of the academic term of the original course.

Students who do not write a final examination because of illness or other circumstances beyond their control may apply to write a deferred examination.
Students are expected to complete a final examination once begun. Minor illnesses and ongoing chronic illnesses under medical management will normally not be considered valid grounds for granting a deferred final examination.
Students who claim illness, injury or other extraordinary circumstances beyond their control as a reason for missed term work are held responsible for immediately informing the instructor concerned and for making alternate arrangements with the instructor and in all cases this must occur no later than three 3. The alternate arrangement must be made before the last day of classes in the term as published in the academic schedule. Normally, any deferred term work will be completed by the last day of term.
In all cases, formative evaluations providing feedback to the student should be replaced with formative evaluations. Term work cannot be deferred by the Registrar. If a mutually agreeable accommodation to complete course requirements prior to the course grade submission deadline cannot be achieved, the Associate Dean will become involved.
If academic accommodation is not granted, and the student receives word prior to the academic withdrawal deadline, the student may elect to withdraw from the course s.

A student who has been offered but does not undertake Supplementary Assessment will receive a grade of Fail FL and the original final mark reinstated. The subsequent grade awarded after completion of a supplementary assessment cannot be greater than a Pass PS. Audit courses will not count toward any graduation requirements. Your instructor may set up specific requirements for auditing the class, and if you do not meet the requirements, you may be removed from the class at your instructor's discretion with a grade of WP or WF.
Be sure to discuss your auditing status with your instructor at the first class meeting. A regular grade course may NOT be changed to audit option and audit course may NOT be changed to regular grade option after the second Friday of the semester. First semester freshmen are not subject to the GPA requirements. Semester hours earned in these courses will count toward total semester hours required for graduation and the grades will be calculated into the undergraduate GPA.
Registration in graduate courses requires permission from the instructor. Participation in this option is at the discretion of the department or school. Graduate courses taken in this manner will not apply to graduate credit at a future time. For Athens campus students, permission slips for departmental honors students may be obtained through the academic departments where the courses are taught.
Return the signed permission slip for processing to Registrar Services, first floor, Chubb Hall no later than the second Friday of the semester. Undergraduate courses that are retaken to improve a grade will be identified automatically at the time you register.
Retaking the course removes the hours and the effect of the earlier grade from the calculation of the grade point average.
However, all grades are printed on the student's academic record transcript. Please note the later grade is the one calculated in the grade point average even if it is lower than the first and the course semester hours duplicated by retaking coursework are not accepted toward the credit hour requirement for graduation. The number of times a student is allowed to retake an undergraduate course for the purpose of improving the grade is restricted to a maximum of two attempts in addition to the first attempt.
Withdrawals are not counted as an attempt.
